Help keep Sarawak River clean: Talib |
|
|
KUCHING: The responsibility to clean up Sarawak River should not only be shouldered by the government alone, said Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) chairman Datuk Talib Zulpilip yesterday.
He said the river could be kept relatively clean if the people could work together and cooperate with the authorities.
'People should not litter. They should not throw rubbish into the river. If they don't cooperate, there is no way the government could maintain its cleanliness,' he pointed out.
He said this to reporters after handing over offer-letters for shoplots to tenants of Medan Niaga Permaidani Kampung Boyan-Gersik-Sourabaya (BGS) at Medan Makanan 2 in Kampung Gersik here yesterday.
Thirty-six people received their offer-letters, 19 of them business kiosk operators and 17, food stalls operators.
The monthly rental for business kiosk is RM80 and food stalls, RM150.
The project was initiated by Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud in mid 2007 and is aimed at creating business opportunities to Bumiputera entrepreneurs and providing a clean and friendly environment for tourists and locals alike.
The project which costs about RM4.8 million includes two covered eating areas with 34 food stalls, 19 business kiosks, riverfront promenade, car parks, toilets and bin centre.
Talib, who is also Jepak assemblyman, believed that the new business premises, opened only yesterday, could become new tourist spot in the city.
'This area could become an iconic spot. It would be a total experience for tourists as they can come here by sampan to have a meal, shop and visit traditional Malay village'.
'Our first step will be to advertise the new spot at our hotels, Top Spot and Kuching Waterfront to promote it to tourists and locals,' he said.
He pointed out that SEDC would consider extending the project if the response was good.
Earlier in his speech, Talib advised the successful tenants to provide good and quality services to customers to attract interest.
Pantai Damai assemblyman Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi also advised the operators to establish a good business system to attract tourists.

Entrepreneurial development is part of nation building |
|
|
DAMAI: Entrepreneurial development is an important agenda in nation-building because entrepreneurs are the generators and movers of the country's economy.
The Chairman of Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC), Datuk Haji Talib Zulpilip said a developing country like Malaysia needed to have plenty of entrepreneurs to enable it to move further and progress.
'Entrepreneurship is an important factor for the creation of a society with high achievement,' he said, when officiating at the Entrepreneurship Apprentice Programme for teachers, counsellors, committee members and primary pupils from Samarahan and Kuching Divisions at Damai Beach Resort here yesterday.
The three-day event was organised jointly by the Education Department and SEDC.
Talib said countries like Japan, Taiwan and Hong Kong had high number of entrepreneurs, who contributed to these countries' rapid progress and development.
The process of educating entrepreneurs must start early, and any person who chose to become an entrepreneur made the right choice as they would help the country to develop, he stressed.
According to Talib, who is also jepak State Assemblyman, entrepreneurs are those people who put their resources together, made things happen and created wealth.
'Once you create wealth, you will create economic activities and job opportunities. It is the entrepreneurs who manage the resources, involve in transportation,' he said.
Talib said that to become entrepreneurs, one must have good attitude, be brave to face challenges and have confidence and discipline as well as being hardworking.
Speaking to reporters later, he disclosed that the programme was the first ever being organised for primary school pupils.
'Before, we used to organise Young Entrepreneurship Programme (PUM) for secondary school students. Our long term goal and hope is to generate young human capital from an early age,' he said, adding that any country that has many entrepreneurs would surely progress.
Meanwhile, the Head of Co-curriculum Section of the State Education Department, Misli Leri, who represented State Education Director, said the programmes was attended by 22 teachers and 110 pupils from 11 primary schools from Samarahan and Kuching Divisions.

'We want to make this new business centre in these three villages as the extention of the business district (golden triangle) as it is so near to the city centre.
'It will be a total experience for tourists as they can reach this place by sampans,' Talib told a news conference after the official launching of Medan Niaga Permaidani Kpg. Boyan-Gersik Sourabaya here yesterday.

Huge potential in fast food business: Talip |
|
|

BINTULU: Local entrepreneurs are urged to create new food industry as a way to stimulate economic activity in the State.
Chairman of Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) Datuk Haji Talip Zulpilip said there was great potential in setting up the 'ready-cooked, fast food' restaurant akin to McDonald concept.
He explained that with more couples now working to supplement the family income, the traditional role of a wife to stay home and cook is gradually fading away.
"With more people now eating out or opting for take-away, it will be a lucrative business venture to cater for this group of working people with the ever-ready cooked food, preferable by selling our Malay or traditional cuisines over the counter," remarked Talip.
He cited McDonald started off its business with merely Beef Burger, French Fries and Coke and had become a household name globally, generating billions of ringgit in profit annually.
He believed local Bumiputra entrepreneurs could emulate the fast food giant by preparing and selling their traditional food into a fast food style.
Talip strongly believed there was a market under this fast food system selling traditional food like grilled fish, pan-fired fish wrapped in banana leaves and others as long as the services over the counter was fast and the food served were of quality.
Talip said this at the opening of the two-day Food and Trade Fair held at Medan Selera Bintulu at Jalan Sultan Iskanda yesterday.
Talip, who is also the Jepak State Assemblyman, said the objectives of this food and trade fair were to create a happy atmosphere among traders besides promoting local cuisines and products.
Talip described the ongoing economic downturn had been making everybody moody and pessimistic as they were also not inclined to spend money or making purchases.
"As what our government is doing like offering stimulus packages, we need to create economic activities locally which will help to generate job opportunities and profits for the traders," said Talip.
He described active economic activities would boost the level of confidence among the people that would make them eventually becoming optimistic.
During the function, Talip also gave away mock keys and trading permits to 13 successful applicants for 'Shop-On-Wheel' scheme, an entrepreneur development programme under SEDC. Each recipient was given one-unit of motorcycle installed with a wagon-like cart to sell foodstuff like vegetables, chilled chicken or meat in villages and longhouses.
He also witnessed the handing over of RM20,000 grant from Malaysia Fisheries Development Authority to each of the two applicants under the 'High Impact Project' scheme. The duo were among the nine recipients receiving a total grant of RM90,000 under the said HIP scheme.
Also present at the function were Deputy Resident Ismawi Salleh, General Manager of Bintulu Development Authority Haji Mohidin Haji Ishak, Director of Entrepreneur Development Division of SEDC, Haji Jamaludin Mohd Yusof and Temenggong Abang Suhaili.
