KUCHING: Sarawakians, especially the younger generation, should not let negative elements undermine the peace and harmony in the state. Assistant Tourism Minister Datuk Talib Zulpilip said this on Wednesday night. "Where on earth can you celebrate Chinese New Year together - where Iban friends, Malay friends, Indian friends and other indigenous friends visit their Chinese friends? "Similarly during Hari Raya, friends of different races and religions visit us (Muslims) during open house," he said during the launching ceremony of the Celebration of Prosperity 2010 by SEDC at Kuching Waterfront Amphitheatre. Also present were Sarawak Tourism Board CEO Datuk Rashid Khan and SEDC general manager Dr Sulaiman Husaini. Talib, who is also SEDC Chairman, said the various races i the State have been living together harmoniously and celebrating each other's festivities, and it has spread to other parts of the country. "Let us keep this good tradition. Let us appriciate and respect one another. Let the people who come to our country know we are peaceful and friendly. If we are not peaceful and friendly, we wouldn't be celebrating (together) with various races. "We don't have time to be divided. There are people who want to see us divided. Let them try but we'll remain united. This is an appeal to fellow Malaysians. Let's live together in peace and harmony. We are always happy so why should we start fighting?" "But of course, not everything is good in life but we want to make an effort to live together harmoniously, he pointed out. Meanwhile, Talib also presented a RM2,000 donation to Chung Hua Middle School No. 1 which was received by principal Yap Chung Yen. The `Celebration of Prosperity 2010' saw performances by the school's Traditional Orchestra and the 24 Drums Performance. The award winning Sarawak Cultural Village dancers presented the 1Malaysia Dance followed by a closing Lion Dance by Hill of Dragon Lion Society Kuching. Borneo Post 10/02/2010 |
