KUCHING: The Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) is planning to franchise preschool education that is current offered by its subsidiary, SeDidik Sdn Bhd. Assistant Minister of Tourism, Datuk Haji Talib Zulpilip, who is also the SEDC chairman said yesterday that SEDC was in the the process of trying to obtain federal funding for that purpose. He said presently the funds to operate SeDidik Sdn Bhd's preschool and day care centres has come from its own resource and fund from the state government. He disclosed this when interviewed by reporters after the presentation of 5S certification to SeDidik Sdn Bhd by the Malaysia Productivity Corporation (MPC) at SeDidik Sdn Bhd's headquarters at Yoshi Square, Jalan Pelabuhan in Pending here yesterday. SeDidik Sdb Bhd is currently operating 58 preschool centres in Sarawak with a 208 staff force teaching over 1,900 preschool children. Talib said that SeDidik could not rest on its laurels because no matter how good they might be, others would try to overtake them. He pointed out that Sedidik had its competitors and as such it must continue to enhance quality through continous improvement. "We want to make SeDidik the premier preschool education provider," he said, adding that there is to be no compromise on quality According to MPC's deputy director-general Haji Ahmad Fadzil Mahmud, SeDidik Sdn Bhd is the first preschool operator in Malaysia to have obtained the 5S certification. He hoped the implementation of 5S in SeDidik would not only be practised among its staff but also taught among the young children enrolled with SeDidik so that they would be instilled with positive values such as hygiene, tidiness, discipline, and cooperation. He also hoped that the success of SeDidik Sdn Bhd in obtaining the 5S certification would be emulated by other preschool operators. "We also hoped that SeDidik will be prepared to share their experience, the good practice and benefit that they have obtained with the implementation of 5S practices not just with its other branches but also with those that are operated by public and private organisations," he said. According to Sulzari bin Mohamed, the general manager of SeDidik Sdn Bhd, the preschools started to actively practise the 5S in August last year as a way to improve productivity and quality service to clients especially children and their parents.
