KUCHING: Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) will be working closely with various agencies to combat negative social activities along Kuching Waterfront.

SEDC chairman Datuk Talib Zulpilip, who is also Assistant Minister of Tourism and Heritage said the agencies would be the Kuching City North Commission (DBKU), the police, the army and Sarawak Islamic Council.

"This is to combat and eradicate negative social activities along the Waterfront, and eventually turn it into a tourism icon," he said during the launch of the 2010 Culture and Community, Kuching Waterfront event calendar at Menara SEDC here yesterday.

Also present during the launch were SEDC deputy general manager Wan Lizozman Wan Omar and Sara Urusharta Sdn Bhd general manager Alan Poh.

Talib said he has always advocated family and community oriented activities.

"As such the Kuching Waterfront, conceptualised as a quality-of-life project and aptly dubbed the `People's Place' will be the ideal avenue for the implementation of the programme," he said.

He pointed out that this year's theme promises a variety of cultural and art activities which will utilise the Waterfront as a platform to showcase the rich cultural heritage of Sarawak.

Talib said the programmes would also promote the Waterfront as a centre for cultural and healthy activities enjoyed by people from all walks of life.

"At the same time it provides a venue for local artists to display their talent," he added.

The Culture and Community programme which would be carried out through December this year is expected to be a big attraction with tourists and the local community.

"The events lined up come in a variety of ethnic dances, demonstrations on local crafts, traditional games, martial arts, local food of various racial groups in the state, and modern activities such as marching bands, street dancing, children talent show, kite-flying competition, street soccer and water activities like kayaking, boat racing and angling," said Talib.

The line-up of events is the product of the concerted efforts of Kuching Waterfront management supported by the Sarawak National Cultural Arts Department, Lembaga Penggalakan Pelancongan Malaysia Sarawak branch and other local cultural and non-governmental organisations.

"With the yearend completion of the Kuching Waterfront extension project undertaken by SEDC, Kuching Waterfront is poised to accommodate more exciting quality-of-life activities in the future," added Talib.
