Swiftlet Eco-Park in the offing Print E-mail

KUCHING:  Sarawak SEDC and  Borneo Resource Synergy Sdn Bhd (BRS) signed a joint venture agreement to set up a Swiftlet Eco-Park near Balingian, Mukah, yesterday.

SEDC had obtained the site approval from the State Planning Authority to set up the Park to facilitate the development of the bird’s nest industry in the State.

The proposed project will involve the construction of 40 three-storey terrace units (each measuring 20 ft x 80 ft) and 15 three-storey bungalow units (each measuring 35 ft x 63 ft).

The proposed project is situated at the Mukah-Balingian coastal highway, 44 kilometres from Mukah town and 15 kilometres from Balingian town. The project will be the  first of many which SEDC intends to develop throughout the State in the near future. Recently, the State government approved eight more lots in Mukah Division with a total area of 68.97 acres.

Swiftlet farming has attrac-ted a lot of interest among entrepreneurs in Sarawak due to the lucrative returns. Most operators started swiftlet farming by converting empty shop lots into bird houses. This contravened the Wild Life Protection (Edible Bird’s Nests) (Amendment) Rules, 2006.

As a result, the relevant authority issued closure notices to all bird houses  operating from shop lots and other similar structures in urban areas.

In order to have a well-planned swiftlet farming industry in the State, the government has tasked SEDC to spearhead the challenge.

BRS is a wholly owned subsidiary of a Peninsula-based company, Masmeyer Holdings Sdn Bhd. In this project, the company will engage the services of Golden Swift Resources Sdn Bhd, a swiftlet farming expert, to provide the technical inputs and know-how.
